OBJECTIVES

  • To honour an individual who has rendered outstanding service to the profession or has made a contribution of distinction to civil engineering
  • To promote the practice and development of excellence in civil engineering in the built environment
  • To create an awareness of the contribution made to the civil engineering industry by SAICE members
  • To develop excellence in civil engineering amongst civil engineers
  • To provide role models for students and young civil engineers
  • To encourage leadership and entrepreneurship in civil engineering
  • To encourage personal development in Civil Engineering practitioners

SUBMISSION DEADLINE INTO SAICE NATIONAL AWARDS: 16 July 2021

CRITERIA

Engineer of the Year:

  • Shown that they have gone out of their way to improve the lives of others
  • Displayed qualities that make them worthy role models for their peers
  • Must be current SAICE members who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to their fellow members, the Institution, the profession and local community
  • The achievements of this engineer should be outstanding and inspirational
  • Has made an impact on the built environment and/or the local community
  • Shown dedication in terms of time, resources and effort
  • Must be registered as a PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER

CRITERIA

Young Engineer of the Year:

  • Awarded to a young engineer, under the age of 36, who has rendered outstanding service to the profession or has made a contribution of distinction to civil engineering
  • Achievements of this young engineer should display outstanding and inspirational examples
  • Young engineer should be an Inspiration to other young engineers and society and shown dedication in terms of time, resources and effort
  • Must be a current SAICE member
  • Must be registered as a PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER

CRITERIA

Technologist of the Year:

  • Display leadership and contribution in civil engineering
  • Established a reputation for professional service
  • Sustained meritorious service to SAICE and the profession
  • Played an outstanding role in the encouragement of personal and professional growth and development amongst technologists
  • Served to uphold and enhance the image of the profession
  • Displayed innovative exploitation of civil engineering technology to create a productive niche in the industry
  • Shown innovative and enterprising involvement of the community in projects
  • Displayed excellence in any civil engineering field like design, construction, management or research
  • Demonstrated an achievement in the advancement of civil engineering technology
  • Must be registered as a PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST

Graduate Engineer of the Year:

  • Leadership in an outstanding manner, establishing a reputation for professional service
  • At least 3 years post-graduation experience as a Graduate Engineer/Technologist/Technician (and under 30 years of age) in the year of the award being made.
  • Shows an interest in personal and professional growth and development of themselves.
  • Serving profession by attendance or involvement in Branch or Division activities.
  • Must be registered as a CANDIDATE PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER/TECHNOLOGIST/ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN and a PAID-UP Graduate/Associate Member of SAICE

CRITERIA

Graduate Technologist of the Year:

  • Leadership in an outstanding manner, establishing a reputation for professional service
  • At least 3 years post-graduation experience as a Graduate Engineer/Technologist/Technician (and under 30 years of age) in the year of the award being made.
  • Shows an interest in personal and professional growth and development of themselves.
  • Serving profession by attendance or involvement in Branch or Division activities.
  • Must be registered as a CANDIDATE PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER/TECHNOLOGIST/ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN and a PAID-UP Graduate/Associate Member of SAICE

 Project or Construction Project Manager of the Year:

  • Shown outstanding achievements in project management¬†
  • Is seen as an inspirational example who deserves recognition¬†
  • Has made a significant Impact on the built environment and/or the local community¬†
  • Shown dedication in terms of time, resources and effort¬†
  • Displayed exceptional budgeting, planning, public relations and technical skills¬†
  • Must be registered as a PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER

NOMINATION PROCEDURE

  • SAICE members may submit nominations for the awards via email to your relevant branch/region chair/secretary

SUBMISSION CONTENTS

Entries must be accompanied by:

  • A short citation
  • Nominee CV
  • Three high resolution photographs

NATIONAL AWARDS ADJUDICATION PROCEDURE

  • Adjudication will be carried out by a nominated panel of at least 3 judges under the Chairmanship of a past president¬†
  • The adjudication will be carried out based on the material submitted¬†
  • The judges will select the winning nominee. The winners will be announced at the National Awards Function in October 2021.

The Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project

  • The Award for the Most Outstanding Civil Project (Technical Excellence)
  • The Award for the Most Outstanding Civil Project (Community-based projects)
  • The Award for the Most Outstanding Civil Project (International projects)

General:

The project will satisfy all or most of the following criteria:

  • It should portray the art and science of civil engineering to the general public and indicate how the profession finds answers to challenging demands.
  • It should be predominantly civil engineering in character.
  • It need not necessarily be complete in all aspects, but the major engineering problems must have been overcome before the end of the year under review.
  • The project should have current public appeal.
  • Awards can be made to any size of the project. Projects which are unique or unusual, where the solution to a problem displays engineering ingenuity in analysis or design or has particular aesthetic appeal, where the handling of environmental impact and/or community involvement is particularly successful, or projects which mark some notable advance or innovation in construction techniques are eligible.
  • Functional efficiency, economy and contribution to the service of mankind by the civil engineer must be demonstrated in the project.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE INTO SAICE NATIONAL AWARDS: 16 July 2021

CRITERIA

Technical Excellence:

  • The project should have unique or unusual features and should demonstrate some notable advance in the solution of engineering problems.
  • It should have aesthetic appeal.
  • It should display engineering ingenuity in analysis or design and/or in construction technique.
  • The project should show functional efficiency.
  • The handling of impacts on the environment should be particularly successful.
  • The project should have been well managed, finishing on time and within budget.

CRITERIA

Community-based:

  • The project should exemplify the benefits of Civil Engineering to society at large.
  • It should involve effective and successful co-operation between the Civil Engineer, the community served by the project and other interested and affected parties such as, the local authorities, non-government organisations and the labour force.
  • The project may be a complete planning study or an exercise in community initiative and involvement and should be innovative, comprehensive and have been substantially completed in the year under review.
  • Both the natural and social environments should have been successfully addressed by the project.
  • The project should show functional efficiency.
  • The handling of impacts on the environment should be particularly successful.
  • The project should have been well managed, finishing on time and within budget.

CRITERIA

International

  • The judges will select the winning nominee. The winners will be announced at the National Awards Function in October 2021.

OBJECTIVE:

To give recognition to the Branch that has successfully advertised the SAICE brand within their region, and to honour their efforts in the industry. The branch is the ‚ÄėFACE OF SAICE‚Äô in 21 regions across South Africa and it should be influential in impacting the lives of its members as well as building the SAICE brand in those particular regions. The winning Branch will be the Branch that has created a positive SAICE brand experience to its members, and achieved the goals set out for it.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 10 September 2021

 

BRANCH ACTIVITIES THAT COUNT TOWARDS THE FINAL DECISION:

Throughout the year the Branch should have done some of the following activities to increase the membership rate, share knowledge, transfer skills and network. These activities include:

  • Technical meetings and site visits
  • Formal dinners, social functions and award ceremonies
  • Courses, conferences and seminars
  • Career guidance initiatives
  • Committee meetings to arrange and manage the Branch activities.
  • Outreach programs including liaising with decision-makers and communities
  • Other major achievements of the Branch which bring a strong positive focus on the Institution or profession may also be taken into account.

CRITERIA:

  • The Branch strategy has to be in line with SAICE‚Äôs vision and mission but remain unique for the region
  • Best practices in planning and objectives to set these achievements have to be met
  • Implementation of tangible mechanisms to obtain Branch member feedback and the use of this information to improve the Branch
  • Positively contributing to members‚Äô Brand experience
  • Demonstrating improvements in the past year, in terms of participation, influence and structures
  • Successful campaigns and impacts that the Branch has hosted or presented

OBJECTIVE:

To give recognition to the Student Chapter that has successfully advertised the SAICE brand at Universities and Universities of Technology across the country. The Student Chapter is the ‚ÄėFace of SAICE‚Äô at these universities and sets an example of professional communication through its parent institution and SAICE. The winning Student Chapter would be the one that has had the most influence and impact on its members.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 10 September 2021

CRITERIA:

  • Creative voice ‚Äď ways of communicating (newsletters, communique – traditional and digital), and or various public forum platforms
  • Successful events that took place throughout the year
  • Resourcefulness with funds
  • Encouraging new membership¬†
  • Positive contribution to student member brand experience
  • Monitoring feedback through various mechanisms
  • Outreach to promote the civil engineering industry to the general public and local community
  • Professional engagement with local businesses and industry professionals

To give recognition to the Division that has had a quantifiable impact on its members. The winning division would be recognised as the division that successfully interacted with divisional members, interest groups as well as government structures concerned with these specific fields.

DIVISION’S ACTIVITIES PROMOTE SAICE IN A POSITIVE LIGHT:

  • To continually host technical meetings and site visits
  • Host formal dinners, social functions and award ceremonies
  • Present courses, conferences and seminars
  • Liaise with associated organisations to take part in joint activities
  • Active participation in outreach programs including liaisons with decision-makers and communities
  • To promote all other major activities and achieve goals that will boost SAICE.

CRITERIA:

  • The vision for the Division that has been developed by its relevant stakeholders and how it aligns with the vison of SAICE.¬†
  • Continuous research to obtain information and feedback from divisional members and then using this information to improve the Division
  • Creating positive SAICE brand experiences which contribute to division member experience
  • Demonstrating improvements in participation, influence and structures within the past year
  • Successfully hosting campaigns to increase member experience
  • To create an impact on the industry
