Project Award for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement – TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

SUBMISSION DUE DATE:       19 August 2016


  • Portray the art and science of civil engineering to the general public and indicate how the profession finds answers to challenging demands
  • Predominately civil engineering in character
  • Be aimed at the public and have current public appeal



  • Unusual and unique
  • Display engineering ingenuity in analysis or design
  • Successfully impacted the environment
  • Involved the community where possible
  • Show some notable advance in innovation construction techniques
  • Be of a particular aesthetic appeal
  • Efficient in functionality
  • Positively impacted the economy
  • Contribute to the service of mankind



  • All projects to be sent to SAICE national office with submission contents and format stated below
  • SAICE branches to send SAICE national office the list of wining projects in their regions by 19 August 2016
  • Branch winners will automatically be entered into the Technical Excellence category
  • Branches may also submit projects that did not win at branch level for Technical Excellence. These projects will be considered for entry based on branch adjudicator motivation.
  • Projects in areas that do not award at branch level must be submitted directly to SAICE national head office.
  • All projects to be received electronically via email or on a disk by 19 August 2016.

Entries to be sent to SAICE national head office on a disk in electronic format with the following contents:

  • Entry form – downloadable from SAICE website
  • A word document no more than 10 pages with the following information
  • Title page with:
  1. Name of project:
  2. Name of client:
  3. Name of consulting engineer / design company:
  4. Name of contractors:
  5. Cost of project (Rand value within budget):
  6. Date of completion (on time)
  • Project overview:
  1. Short introduction and background of project, history and engineering problem faced
  • Project description:
  1. The purpose of the project – no more than 200 words
  • Project summary with:
  1. A brief synopsis of unusual or unique features
  2. A brief statement of engineering ingenuity in analysis or design
  3. A brief statement on how the project impacted the environment
  4. A brief statement on the involvement of the community
  5. A brief statement on any innovative construction techniques used
  6. A brief statement on the project aesthetic appeal
  7. A brief statement on what characteristics make the project functional
  8. A brief statement on how the project impacts the economy
  9. A brief statement on how the project contributes to the service of mankind
  • Project phases summary with five photographs explaining various project stages
  • Two drawings or illustrations relating to the entry
  • Five high resolution jpeg photographs showing the project in its natural environment – to be used for the audio-visual showcase at the awards function
  • A five slide PowerPoint presentation project summary with optional video and voice over content



  • Adjudication will carried out by a nominated panel of 4 – 5 industry professionals
  • At this level, the adjudication criteria will be as follows:
  • Meeting the general, technical excellence and benefit to society criteria as listed previously –    75%
  • Public relation value – 15%
  • Conforming to the prescribed submission format as described above – 10%
  • The adjudication will be carried out based on the material submitted.
  • The winners will be announced at the SAICE SAFCEC Annual Awards function on 13 October 2016
