Civil Engineering June 2021 55 Madeleen Engelbrecht Madeleen Engelbrecht (Pr Eng) holds a BEng in civil engineering from Stellenbosch University and an honours degree in transport engineering from the University of Pretoria. She is a transport engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the consulting engineering industry, specialising in traffic engineering, land use and transport integration, and transport master planning. She has completed numerous projects in the city planning, transport, and property sectors, with a specific focus on sustainable solutions. Projects range from traffic signal system design and optimisation to parking concepts, roads planning and intersection design, traffic impact studies, development master planning as well as multi-modal transport assessments. Madeleen has been a committee member of the SAICE Transport Division since 2009 and served as the division chair in 2014 and 2015. Bridgette Kerst Bridgette Kerst (Pr Eng) holds a BSc in civil engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. She joined SAICE as a student member in her first year, following in the footsteps of her father. After graduation she joined the Johannesburg Branch, and later the Executive Board, before going on to lead the Membership and Diversity Panels at SAICE, in addition to being actively involved in developing the Growing Forward Together strategy. Bridgette’s career started at Rand Water and focused mainly on structures. She moved to the consulting sector after a few years and worked at firms designing commercial buildings and later industrial structures. As an associate at Arup, she has been involved in high profile failure investigations and design and project management of large multidisciplinary projects in Africa and Europe. Wiero Vogelzang Wiero Vogelzang (Pr CPM, Pr Eng, COREN) is the Managing Director of Arcus GIBB Nigeria, a Director of Dhlamini GIBB Swaziland, and a Technical Executive of GIBB Engineering and Architecture. He has played leading roles in several major projects throughout Southern Africa and Africa that the various companies have been involved in. Some of the flagship projects include the Mauritius and Port Harcourt Water Master Plans, acting as Owner’s Engineer for the Millennium Challenge Corporation in Mozambique, and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority’s Blue and Red Line light rail networks. Wiero also acts as a technical advisor for the Nigerian Ministry of Aviation for the identification and develop- ment of airport cities adjacent to Lagos and Abuja airports as well as various agro/cargo facilities at several Nigerian regional airports. Theunis van Zyl Theunis van Zyl (Pr Tech Eng, Pr CPM, Pr CM) is the Founder and Managing Director of VAN ZYL & ASSOCIATES. He has 30 years of local and international experience in the consulting engineering and construction industry, ranging from multi-storey buildings to concrete struc- tures, and multi-disciplinary engineering infrastructure development. He is an accredited training provider in the GCC and JBCC forms of contract and was also responsible for vetting the new General Conditions of Subcontract (First Edition, 2018), the publication of SAICE Amicable Settlement Guidelines (First Edition, 2021), various articles for SAICE on contractual affairs, and serves as custodian for all SAICE GCC suite FAQs. Since 2009 he has specialised in construction law, and presides as arbitrator, adjudicator, or mediator in various matters of dispute in adjudication, mediation and arbitration and the project management of multi-disciplinary projects.  SAICE appoints new Fellows The SAICE College of Fellows has elevated four SAICE members to the grade of Fellow, recognising their achievements and contributions to the civil engineering profession. THE GRADE OF SAICE FELLOW EXPLAINED A Fellow is a Corporate Member of SAICE who has achieved appropriate recognition in the civil engineering profession and/ or in the Institution. They are considered to have significantly contributed to the profession, displaying substantial responsi- bility and initiative in the practice of civil engineering, and have considerable professional experience. This membership category presently comprises around 3% of SAICE’s total membership. A nominee is usually proposed for this honour by a SAICE Branch or Technical Division on the appropriate application form, and the nomination must be supported by three Corporate Members, at least one of whom must be a Fellow. Nominations are considered by the SAICE College of Fellows, which comprises the current President, President Elect, Immediate Past President and two recent Past Presidents. Approved nominees are recommended to the Executive Board for confirmation and thereafter notified by letter from the CEO. They may then proudly display FSAICE behind their names.
