G ené Fourie was both surprised and incredulous upon being named the 14 th winner of the SAICE Know Your Sector Competition. “I would like to thank SAICE for this initiative to learn about our sector. We can easily find ourselves confined to our own bubble, but this platform allows us the opportunity to easily learn about our exciting industry,” she said. Gené is an engineer at SMEC South Africa within the Management Services function group, currently based in their Johannesburg office. She was awarded a bursary through SMEC during the first year of her BSc Civil Engineering degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and was fortunate to start working at SMEC directly after graduating in 2015. She is currently completing a Master’s in Information Technology Big Data Science through the University of Pretoria on a part-time basis. She is furthering her education to enhance her big data and data science skills, and her understanding of the big data science environment. She aims to use big data, and the management thereof, as a tool to leverage innovation in the built environment. “Everything in the built environment provides an opportunity to collect data, to optimise processes and expenditure. On the other hand, just because we can collect data for everything, does not mean we should. Knowing how and what to prioritise, being cognisant of the ethical considerations and implications, and understanding the big data management lifecycle, is imperative when trying to coordinate the two (previ- ously) separate sectors,” explains Gené. When she is not working or studying, Gené likes to spend time in the ballet studio. “I find that when I dance, I am fully immersed in the art – which is necessary when trying to balance a fulltime job and a master’s degree. The drawcard of ballet for me is the unique combination of strength, technique, musicality and grace. As dancers, we strive for that perfection, and as engineers, we enjoy a challenge.” Gené would like to spend her winnings on trip to the Kruger National Park with her family.
