Earlier last month, delegates from the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) received a warm welcome from the SAICE Durban branch committee members. Mr I.O Ijirotimi, chairman of NICE, was part of the group of engineers and was the main liaison during the visit to Durban.
The delegates were transported to the Electron Road Waste Management Facility in Springfield Durban and were welcomed by Mr John Parkin (Deputy Head: Plant and Engineering: Durban Solid Waste Department) and Mr Marc Wright (Project Engineer: Plant and Engineering: Durban Solid Waste Department. Mr John Parkin addressed the delegation and gave a brief introduction on the facility and waste management within the eThekwini region. Thereafter, Marc Wright gave an informative tour of the facility discussing design, construction and operation plans for the facility.
The enthusiasm and eagerness of the Nigerian engineers led to the visit of the Landfill-gas to electricity EThekwini CDM project at the Bisasar Road landfill site within close proximity of the Waste Management Facility.
The Nigerians were impressed and pleased with both site visits. The visit has paved the path for on-going communication, collaboration and relationships between Nigeria and South Africa.
