The SAICE Water Engineering Division Presidential Breakfast lecture was recently held at the Bryanston Country Club in Johannesburg.

Following the breakfast, which introduced SAICE 2016 President and well-known water expert Dr Chris Herold, was a lecture by Nandha Govender – General Manager at Eskom.

WHAT CAN THE WATER SECTOR LEARN FROM ESKOM?

In a presentation titled ‘Lessons for the water sector based on Eskom’s water management experience’, Govender highlighted three risks facing the water industry and what Eskom was doing to improve the situation.

Risk 1 emphasized on:

  • insufficiency of water supply leading to electricity production,
  • constraints caused by lack of adequate water resources and infrastructure, and
  • poor asset management.

Govender also elaborated on aspects which often plague this industry, namely energy efficiency and energy demand site management, water conservation and demand management programme, and diversification of the energy mix.

Risk 2 expanded on:

  • deteriorating water quality that leads to increased treatment costs,
  • waste water and water usage, and
  • non-compliance at power stations caused by pollution of water resources like water augmentation schemes, upgrade of water treatment plants, monitoring, trending and analysis of water quality data.

Risk 3 highlighted:

  • water cost increases leading to increased electricity costs
  • tariffs caused by increased water demand
  • inefficiencies
  • water losses
  • non-payment, and
  • new infrastructure.

The outcome of the presentation led to a call to action underlining the importance of strengthening advocacy, lobbying and partnerships with key stakeholders to intensify the following:

  • collaborative and collective action around water risks and challenges,
  • utilising existing partners,
  • focusing on sustainability principles, and
  • development and implementation of water conservation and demand management programmes.

Awards were given to Best Water Engineering Papers, and Best Water Article submissions to the SAICE Journal and Magazine during the period 2013 to 2014.
