The University of Pretoria’s (UP) Department of Civil Engineering, hosted its Annual Projects Evening on 29 October 2015. At the event an audience of just over 200 students, lecturers, special guests and parents gathered at the Rautenbach Hall, Hatfield Campus, for an evening of showcasing and celebrating the outstanding research produced by the class of 2015. The evening began with a mass viewing of over a 150 project posters which featured the exceptional research of the departments final year students. At the viewing, students – dressed to the nines, posed for photos and stood proudly next to their posters and took the time to explain specifics of their research and answer related questions to the crowd that milled by. The guests in attendance were invited to the main hall to watch the top five students from the department present their research projects. The presenters wooed the audience with their effortless presentations which showed off their ability to keep a crowd engaged and having fun while demonstrating their firm grasp of technical knowledge and capabilities.
At the end of the evening, Head of School, Prof Elsabe Kearsley commended students and lecturers alike on their outstanding work and commitment to their studies and teaching, respectively. The top five students who were honoured with prizes at the prize-giving at the conclusion of the programme were, Nicholas Tickle, Khutjo Makgopa, Tiaan Bosman and Osar Tarique, Li-Bonne Swart. A student selected out of these top 5 high performers will represent UP at the National IP Showdown on 26 November 2015, where they will compete with representatives from 5 other universities for a grand cash prize as well as a bursary towards a post-graduate course of their choice, valued at R20 000!
