Call for nominations for the AWARD FOR YOUNG ENGINEER OF THE YEAR
OBJECTIVE:

To honour a young engineer under the age of 36 who has:

    • rendered outstanding service to the profession
  • made a contribution of distinction to civil engineering

To promote excellence in civil engineering by:

    • fostering a culture of distinction in civil engineering within the built environment profession particularly with students
    • creating awareness of the contribution made to the civil engineering industry by the Institution (SAICE) and its support systems particularly to school learners with a view to grow the profession
    • provide a support role for young civil engineers
    • encouraging leadership and entrepreneurship in civil engineering
    • encouraging personal development in young civil engineers

 

         CRITRIA:

The young engineer must be:

    • A current SAICE member
    • Professionally registered as a PR Eng or on the road to registration
    • Dedicated to the civil engineering industry
    • Actively involved in the Institution (SAICE) particularly with the Young Members Panel (YMP)
    • Dedicated to the local community with regard to civil engineering
    • An inspiration to others in the field as well as the general public
    • Actively encouraging others to participate in the Institution (SAICE)
    • Worthy role models for their peers

 

The engineer must have achieved/displayed the following:

    • Outstanding achievements that deserve recognition
    • Recognition as an inspiration to other young engineers and society
    • A positive impact in the built environment and/or local community
    • High dedication levels by contributing their time, resources and effort

 

NOMINATION CONTENT AND ENTRY FORMAT:

Nominations to be sent to SAICE national head office electronically via email to brigitte@saice.org.za with the following information:

  • A word document with the following content and questions answered

1.    Title page with:

  • Name of nominee:
  • Company of employment:
  • Designation/role of nominee:
  • Age of the nominee:
  • Registration or registration category being pursued:

2.   Citation:

  • Short motivation stating the reason for the nomination

3.      Professional career achievements:

  • Academic achievements accomplished, including academic qualifications
  • Corporate achievements
  • Types of project/s involvement
  • Other outstanding achievements in the industry

4.      Contribution and impact on civil society:

  • Contributions that have been made
  • Community outreach programs promoting civil engineering
  • Contributions made to the upliftment of the community

5.      Project management ability and career progress examples:

  • Technical knowledge and skills and willingness to learn from experienced engineers
  • Ability to give input and assist with solving problems when challenges arise
  • Ability to find possible solutions for challenges that arise

6.     Impact made on civil engineering aspects:

  • Involvement in major projects with regard to giving input and design
  • Innovative ideas and thinking
  • Given input and assistance on how to minimize the impact on the environment
  • How society has benefited from the young engineer’s input

7.     Professional environment:

  • General opinion of employee, supervisor or project manager of the young engineer
  • Commitment in terms of being a team player
  • Demonstration of leadership skills in developing his/her areas of expertise

8.   Photographs:

  • Five high-resolution photographs of the nominee, in the their professional and  / or casual environment

9.  CV/ Bio:

  • Short one page CV or bio of the nominated young engineer

NOMINATION PROCEDURE:

  • Nominations for this award shall be submitted to the National Office by SAICE members, companies or branches and divisions
  • The completed relevant document can be sent electronically to brigitte@saice.org.za
  • With a  short citation motivation why the nominee has been selected
  • A brief  bio or CV of the nominee
  • Five high-resolution photographs of the nominee consisting of corporate and casual photos. These can include any social or family setting
  • Entries to reach SAICE no later than 2nd September 2016 – email brigitte@saice.org.za

 

ADJUDICATION PROCEDURE:

    • Adjudication will be carried out by a nominated panel of at least three judges under the Chairmanship of a past president
    • At this level, the adjudication will be carried out on the material submitted in the citation and entry
  • The judges will select the most deserving Young Technician for the award and this will be announced at the annual awards function on 13th October 2016

Nominations for this award will close on 9 September 2016
