Civil Engineering June 2021 51 SA I CE & Profess i onal News Committee members Abraham (Abri) Coenraad Vermeulen, Pr Eng Chairperson Abri has over 29 years’ experience in the water sector in Southern Africa in both water services and water resources management, more than 15 of which was in the then National Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (now Department of Water and Sanitation). He has extensive knowledge and experience in managing national, regional and local projects and programmes of policy development, institutional support and development and drafting of legislation and bylaws. He has designed and implemented government support programmes to munici- palities to develop institutional capacity for water services delivery, asset management, and operation and maintenance of infrastructure. Werner Comrie, Pr Eng Vice chairperson and industry outreach portfolio Werner is the chief operating officer and managing director of engineering at Mamadi & Company. His career spans more than 30 years in the water sector. He started in 1988 with the then Department of Water Affairs doing design of bulk water infrastructure, eventually moving up to chief engineer and programme manager for water resources manage- ment as well as water services planning and management. Since 2008 he has worked in consultancy as head of the water divisions at Zutari (previously Aurecon) and AECOM Africa. Werner is currently involved in growth of QSE at Mamadi & Company, to support future infrastructure development in the country and the rest of Africa. Segomotso Edison Kelefetswe, Pr Eng Past chairperson and SAICE representative on SANCOLD Segomotso’s experience includes planning, design and construction of dams. He has also conducted dam safety inspections for large dams in South Africa and Botswana and performed site supervision in the construction of water conveyance struc- tures inclusive of dams, pump stations and large diameter pipelines. Segomotso currently works as a project engineer for the Trans- Caledon Tunnel Authority dealing with management of technical deliverables of bulk raw water infrastructure such as abstraction weirs, pump stations and pipelines with associated infrastructure. Stéfan Malan, Pr Eng Treasurer A professional engineer with 29 years of experience, Stéfan has worked mainly on major multi-disciplinary projects. He has experience in the management of design teams and as services manager in the design and design integration (civil, mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation) of engine rooms and pump station facilities, storage structures, pipelines, and water supply networks within a multi- disciplinary project environment. He currently holds the position of Senior Associate, Water and Integrated Infrastructure with GIBB. Dr Christopher Edward Herold, Pr Eng Water crisis portfolio Chris is the managing director of Umfula Wempilo Consulting. His experience includes hydrology, water resources, and water quality catchment and system model development and application in numerous projects for Introducing the SAICE Water Engineering Division committee SAICE’s Water Engineering Division has a history of over 56 years since its establishment as the Division of Hydraulic Engineering in 1965. The division’s purpose is the art and science of water engineering, including water resources, water quality investigation and development, and the provision of water supply and sanitation. The SAICE Water Engineering Division has some 3 342 members, making it one of the largest SAICE divisions. It is led by a committee of volunteers who are all industry specialists. In this issue of the Civil Engineering we feature the dedicated committee members who give their time and expertise to serve SAICE members in the field of water engineering.
