He has worked on several Water Research Commission research projects and published technical papers and media releases related to South Africa’s growing water crisis. Mike Muller, Pr Eng Strategic matters and academia portfolio Mike advises many local and inter- national organisations on water and development issues and is a visiting adjunct Professor at the Wits School of Governance. As a National Planning Commissioner (2010 to 2015) he focused on economic infrastructure, the environment/climate/energy nexus and Southern African development and integration. As Director General of Water Affairs (1997 to 2005) he led the development of new policies and legislation; programmes in water resources and services that provided safe water to over ten million people; water- sharing negotiations with Mozambique and Swaziland; the South African side in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project; and guided major domestic projects. He worked at the Development Bank of Southern Africa during the political transition (1988 to 1994) and was a co-founder of the Mvula Trust. Mike is par- ticularly interested in the drive to professionalise engineering in the public service, policy analysis and commentary, and communications. Kevin Mason James, Pr Eng Events portfolio Kevin has 40 years’ post-qualification experience as a civil engineer and project manager on a wide range of water services and infrastructure development projects in the private and public sectors. His focus has been mainly in managing projects through master planning, feasi- bility studies, design and construction. He is currently a technical director, leading the Water and Sanitation Division of GladAfrica Consulting Engineers. Kubendran (Kuben) Govender, Pr Tech Eng Education and training portfolio Kuben is a civil engineering technologist with more than 19 years’ experience in the civil engineering industry, special- ising in water and sanitation services. He is the regional head of inland provinces and executive manager: water and sanitation at Mariswe. Key experience includes project and construction management; design of water reticulation, sewer reticulation, bulk water and sewer infra- structure; water and sewer pump stations; water and wastewater treatment; retaining structures; mechanically stabilised earth walls; hydraulic structures; stormwater canals; water demand and yield analysis; water resource studies; master planning; integrated development plans; water services development plans; compre- hensive infrastructure planning; and feasibility studies. Christiaan Frederik Beyers Havenga, Pr Eng Industry outreach portfolio Beyers holds the position of senior engi- neer: water and infrastructure at GIBB Engineering and Architecture. During his extensive career he was responsible for the planning and construction of dam projects in South Africa and was the project manager for the design, tender documents, and construction supervision of the Metolong Dam in Lesotho. Beyers was also the project manager for the construc- tion supervision of the Metolong Water Treatment Works and Downstream Conveyance System, and was project manager for the tender design and compilation of tender documents for the Polihali Dam in Lesotho. Mpondomise Nkosinathi (Nathi) Ndawo, Pr CPM Awards portfolio Nathi is a project manager for bulk water pipelines. He is responsible for day-to-day execution of bulk water pipeline projects including supply, treatment, pumping systems, collections and distribution sys- tems, from planning to design through to construction. Part of his portfolio includes communicating with clients, internal and external stakeholders, establishing goals and objectives for project teams, scheduling, risk management, and coordinating resources to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the performance expectations of the client. In addition, he is involved in supervising and supporting the work of others, and mentoring junior-level technical staff. Mitchelle Murigo Membership portfolio Mitchelle is a civil engineer with seven years of work experience in the design, construction and management of various water infrastructure projects. Her main areas of interest lie in water conservation and water demand management. She is passionate about mentoring and giving back, and finds great joy in knowing that the work she does impacts and improves the everyday lives of people. Khomotjo Gerald Maime Student outreach/under 36 portfolio Gerald is a candidate civil engineer with more than three years’ experience in water and sanitation services in the engineering industry. He currently works for Mariswe in the Pretoria Water Division. His experience includes municipal water and sewer design and draughting. He has functioned as a design engineer and assistant project manager for several projects, facilitating key project management activities such as client liaison, design report writing, wayleave applications, tendering and expressions of interest.
