Frances (Frankie) A’Bear Pr Eng Portfolios: Student outreach and <36 and membership, marketing and communications Frankie is currently a Water Engineer at WSP and has worked in hydraulic infrastructure research, water service design and clean water asset management. Frankie recently led the Seawater Intake project at Foskor Richards Bay. The project involved reviewing the existing system, identifying feasible solutions, and verifying the solutions using a hydraulic model. The project was challenging as it was in a difficult environment and required stringent safety protocols. She managed a team of civil, me- chanical, and marine engineers. Frankie enjoys the fact that water engineering touches on the boundaries between the built environment, society, and the natural environment. Providing access to water services and safety from floods and drought means that people get a much greater quality of life and can focus on the things that matter most to them. Jayant Bhagwan Jayant is the Executive Manager of the key strategic area of Water Use, Wastewater Resources and Sanitation Futures at the South African Water Research Commission, which focuses on the management of water and wastewater in the domestic, mining and industrial sectors. He has been instrumental in creating the portfolio of research projects and innovations related to water supply and wastewater management. With his knowledge and experience gained in implementation of water and sanitation projects, he has participated in the shaping of national water policy and legislation. He continues to be actively involved in a broad range of areas in the field of water supply, wastewater and sanitation, with a current focus on sanitation technologies for the future, technology innovation and application, social franchising of O&M, conduit hydropower, benchmarking, reuse and reclamation of effluents. One of the highlights in his career was building a suspension bridge with a community in the Eastern Cape. Jayant takes pride in the flexibility to innovate and drive impact within the sector. Sayed I A Sayed Ally Pr Tech Eng, Green Star AP Portfolio: Represents SAICE at SABS committee on water efficiency Sayed is a registered civil engineering professional with 19 years of experi- ence in civil engineering design, specialising in building wet services engineering (plumbing design) and construction management. He is also a Green Star accredited professional with GBCSA. Sayed’s holistic work experience within the civil engineering spectrum ranges from being on a contracting team, a medium design consulting firm, eThekwini Municipality and with a large corporate international multi-disciplinary engineering firm. He is currently the director of ALLYCIV, which specialises in building wet services design. Sayed believes that it is important to save water by practical and water efficient design that brings happiness to communities and clients. Khayelihle (Khaya) Nhlakanipho Buthelezi Pr Tech Eng Portfolios: Continuing education and training and external stakeholders (including industry) Khaya is a professional engineering technologist with over 10 years of industry and working experience. The main areas of his experience include process engineering, water/waste- water operations support and management, project coordination, and management (all in the bulk water/wastewater resource man- agement environment). As a process engineer he is responsible for leading process design and treatment technology application for water/wastewater treatment works. One of the milestones in his career path was attaining profes- sional registration. Khaya says that his career in water engineering allows him to interact with different people at different levels across the wide spectrum of society. At the height of this, one becomes deeply entrenched in communities to provide solutions that improve access to water and dignified sanitation. Werner Paul Comrie Pr Eng Portfolio: Industry outreach Werner, who is currently self em- ployed as a consultant, has over 30 years’ experience, primarily in water engineering. His early career was in the public sector in the design and construction of dams, pipelines and canals.
