Werner then moved to consulting engineering and was the water lead at both Aurecon (now Zutari) and AECOM, respon- sible for multi-disciplinary functions including water resources management and planning, dams and hydropower, water and wastewater treatment, water conveyance, surface water hydrology and stormwater management as well as groundwater development and mining water management. Werner enjoys serving society with sustainable solutions and being able to work in such a life-giving environment, where talented people pull together. Francis John George Gibbons Pr Eng, FSAICE Portfolios: Continuing education and training and events and awards Francis is a professional civil engineer and project manager with over 40 years’ experience in consulting in the water engineering field, mostly with the firm Royal HaskoningDHV, from which he has retired, and its prede- cessor in South Africa, SSI. His expertise lies in the engineering and project management of bulk water supply and wastewater schemes, inter-basin transfer schemes, major pump stations, river and dam intakes, dams, hydropower and pumped storage schemes, river structures including bridges and culverts, and urban water supply and sanitation. One of the highlights of his career is his involvement in the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme. Francis enjoys the variety of projects in water engineering, and how the individuals in the project team contribute to achieving the team goals as well as developing their own expertise. Kubendran Govender Pr Tech Eng Portfolio: Education and training Kubendran is a Director, Regional Head Inland Provinces, and Executive Manager: Water and Sanitation Inland Provinces at Mariswe. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the civil engineering industry, specialising in water and sanitation services. One of the milestones in his career was when he was the civil engineering technologist responsible for the design of the Maseru Wastewater Project. The scope included the design of all new sewers, raw sewerage pumpstations and the rehabilitation or upgrade of existing sewer infrastructure within the Masowe, Lepereng, Rajamose and Agri-college areas. The sewer network services 1 080 new households, with a total of 8 898 households connected to the network. The role Kubendran plays in planning and implementing projects that provide water to communities is extremely fulfilling. He is also passionate about the development and adoption of new technologies that would provide improved access to basic water and sanitation services for communities, as well as increase the efficiency of project implementation. Dr Christopher (Chris) Edward Herold Pr Eng, FSAICE Portfolio: Water crisis Chris is the managing director of Umfula Wempilo Consulting. His experience includes hydrology, water resources and water quality catch- ment and system model development and application in numerous projects for the Department of Water and Sanitation and various other clients since 1977. He has worked on several Water Research Commission research projects and pub- lished technical papers and media releases related to the growing water crisis faced by South Africa. Kevin Mason James Pr Eng, FSAICE Portfolio: Events Kevin has been in the profession for 40 years and currently provides profes- sional support services on a freelance basis. He has successfully fulfilled the role of business manager and project manager in large consulting com- panies and has been predominantly focused on the water sector. Projects have ranged from master planning and feasibility studies to de- sign and implementation of a broad spectrum of water resources and municipal infrastructure development projects in the public and private sectors. A major career highlight was being project manager for the successful implementation of the multi-award winning Mooi- Mgeni Water Transfer Scheme Phase 2 which included the Spring Grove Dam. Kevin enjoys the diversity of projects from supporting basic human needs to major water resource infrastructure projects and all the wonderful people met along the way. Jabulani Mayise Pr Tech Eng Portfolio: Membership, marketing and communications Jabulani is a professionally registered engineering technologist (civil) currently employed by eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Unit. His duties include overall management of the control valve division responsible for operation and maintenance of hydraulic control valves and associated components within the city. Other previous experience includes working as a site agent responsible for the construction of water pipelines and reinforced concrete reservoirs. He has also worked as a resident engineer on various pipeline projects.
