Mbiye Paco Mukendi Portfolio: Student outreach and <36 membership Mbiye Paco is a candidate engineering technologist, currently working as an assistant resident engineer. He has four years’ working experience in construction management and super- vision, working on projects such as wastewater treatment plants, storm- water, sewer pipelines, subsoil drainage and roads. He started his career working as a student technician on the civil works of the upgrade of the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Plant, which led him to specialise in water engineering. On the same project he had the opportunity to take on the position of site manager until the project’s practical completion. Mbiye Paco says that he likes being part of the solution and taking risks. He enjoys seeing the impact of every idea and deci- sion that he makes, transforming people’s lives. Mitchelle Murigo Pr Eng Portfolio: Membership,marketing and communications, student outreach and<36 Mitchelle is a civil engineer with eight years’ work experience in the design, construction and manage- ment of various water infrastructure projects. Her main areas of interest lie in water conservation and water demand management. She is passionate about mentoring and giving back and finds great joy in knowing that the work she does impacts and improves the everyday lives of people. Mike Muller Pr Eng After 11 years at the (then) National Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF, now Department of Water and Sanitation) and five years with the National Planning Commission, Mike now divides his time between advisory work (on energy, climate and development policy gener- ally), research (particularly looking at long-term water resource management challenges and how to align technical planning with social planning), as well as supervising post-graduate students, and public engagement more broadly. A career highlight was Madiba opening the first RDP water project at Moretele in North West in 1995; 10 years later when Mike left DWAF, the team had provided supply infrastructure for over 10 million people. Mike believes that water services make a real and imme- diate difference to every household in the country, while the management of water resources requires practitioners to bring the global climate and development perspectives down to earth in a practical way that helps to keep our societies functioning. Mike mainly offers strategic perspectives and helps to identify areas in which SAICE can make a difference. Mpondomise Nkosinathi (Nathi) Ndawo Pr CPM Portfolio: Awards Nathi is a Senior Director: Estate and Infrastructure and is responsible for the day-to-day execution of water main projects, including supply, treatment, pumping, collection and distribution systems, from design through to construction. He communicates with clients and internal and external stake- holders, establishes goals for project teams, creates schedules, man- ages risks, and coordinates resources to deliver projects on time, within budget, and according to client performance expectations. He is also responsible for supervising and supporting the work of others in the team and mentoring junior technical staff. A milestone in his career has been obtaining his master’s degree. In his own words, “Water engineering is a bridge between a country’s social and economic development. Without clean, easily accessible water, South Africa can remain trapped in poverty for generations.” Debbie Besseling Debbie has worked as a consultant to SAICE for nearly nine years and is the technical divisions administrator for a number of SAICE’s divisions. With her extensive experience in public relations, communications, events management and publishing, Debbie specialises in the more technical fields of engineering and mining. For the SAICE Water Engineering Division specifically, she works on a number of portfolios including events management and awards, membership, marketing, and communications.
