SAICE Mourns the Loss of Young Lives in Vanderbijlpark Scholar Transport Tragedy and Calls for Urgent Safety Reforms

January 2026: The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) extends its deepest condolences to the families, schools, and communities devastated by the tragic loss of young lives in Vanderbijlpark on the morning of 19 January 2026. Twelve children lost their lives while travelling to school, a routine journey that should never place a child in harm’s way. Several others were injured, and countless families and classmates now carry the trauma of a loss that no parent, teacher, or community should ever endure.
As a community, we mourn children whose dreams, talents, and potential were cruelly cut short. We mourn with parents whom, were unaware that they would never again welcome their children home. We mourn with educators who now face empty desks, and with communities grappling with grief at the very start of the academic year.
“This tragedy has shaken us to our core,” says Sekadi Phayane-Shakhane, Chief Executive Officer of SAICE. “Our hearts are with every family affected. No words can ease such pain, but we owe it to these children and to every child in South Africa to ensure that this does not happen again.”
Preliminary reports indicate that the incident involved a minibus transporting learners to school which collided with a heavy vehicle on a busy arterial road. While the full investigation is still underway, the circumstances surrounding this crash point once again to the deeply interconnected challenges of road design, vehicle safety, driver behaviour, traffic management, and regulatory oversight. These are not isolated failures; they are systemic weaknesses that demand urgent and coordinated action.
From an engineering and transport planning perspective, this tragedy underscores the vulnerability of scholar transport within South Africa’s broader road environment. Many learner routes traverse roads originally designed for freight movement and high-speed vehicular traffic, not for the daily transport of children. Inadequate separation between light and heavy vehicles, impatient driver behaviour, insufficient traffic calming, poor visibility, and inconsistent enforcement create conditions where a single error can have catastrophic consequences.
Equally critical is the regulation and professionalisation of scholar transport operations. Vehicles transporting children must meet the highest standards of roadworthiness, be operated by properly trained and continuously assessed drivers, and be subject to consistent oversight.
